RB Ratings

What does RB Ratings do?
RB Ratings supplies ratings for Australian, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore horse races. Our clients receive a ratings sheet for each race meeting, after the morning scratchings. Our standard package covers EVERY meeting on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Public Holidays. Our Sunday service covers all the provincial meetings.  We also send out ratings for major meetings during the week, such as Friday night meetings at Canterbury and Moonee Valley, as well as any big cup day meetings like the Melbourne Cup.  Hong Kong and Singapore races are now included in our standard package at no extra cost.

Can I win at the track using your Ratings?
Yes. The answer is below, but read the next bit first so you know what it all means.

What do I get if I subscribe?
Each race day you will receive an email with several PDF files, one for each of the major meetings that day. You will also receive a CSV file that can be loaded into Excel. The CSV file has every horse racing that day with all the information in columns ready to sort, filter or import into your database.

The PDF files are perfect for printing in landscape mode.

What do all those columns mean?
To help read the ratings sheet here is description of some the fields that may be a mystery. The numbers next to columns, like this [##], are the rank.
AS = Age/Sex
BP = Barrier position after scratchings
Pos = predicted running position. Front, Front/Handy, Handy, Handy/Midfield, Midfield, Backmarker.
TR = Trainer rating
App = Apprentice jockey claim in kgs
JR = Jockey rating. Very important
Sts = Career Starts
API = Average prize money per run in $1000
D+/- = Change in distance from previous start
W+/- Change in weight from previous start
LSM = Last start margin. A winning margin is negative. eg -3.0 would be a win by 3 lengths.
DLS = Days since last start.
Rtg2 = RB Ratings alternative rating. Focuses heavily on recent wins and also includes calculations for likely predicted pace.
Rtg = RB Ratings rating produced using the method outlined in Roger Biggs' book Handicapping My Way.
AP100 = Assessed Price. An estimate of the true odds using the Ratings as a base.  Other proprietary factors are applied to finalise the price.

I see you have a Jockey Rating. Do you rate all jockeys?
Yes, we rate every jockey just before each race day. The jockey ratings are probably the single most important factor to consider in conjunction with the final Rtg and Rtg2. Not all jockeys are created equal, in fact some should go find another job. You can check out our Jockey Ratings. The table is now fully searchable and you can sort.

How much does it cost?
We believe in value for money and service. Our subscriptions are very inexpensive. The standard package of ratings for Saturday and Wednesday meetings just $125 for 13 weeks! That works out to be less than $5 per race day. Find out more about our subscription packages.

OK that sounds great, but now the real question can I actually make money from betting on the races?
Absolutely! Plenty of people in Australia, including our clients, are making a substantial living from punting on the horses. Is it easy? No it is not, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you. Winning on the punt takes effort, diligence and commitment. The purpose of RB Ratings is to take away some of the effort required, in order to win. Our ratings help you by saving you valuable time and effort in compiling your own ratings. If you would like to compile your own ratings then contact us, I may be able to help you there.

I don't have time to do the form. Is there a quick and dirty way to make money and stay in front?
We get this question all the time. Most punters are time poor and need help to make selections. Our ratings files make narrowing down race fields to the best chances fast and easy. But sometimes you might not have any time at all so a quick and dirty method to get you in the black is to follow the wise adage of Pittsburg Phil, who wrote, "Good Jockey, Good Horse, Good Bet". You can read all of his ideas here Racing Maxims and Methods of Pittsburg Phil, published in 1908. Yes that's right 1908! Over 100 years ago and still highly valid today. To his famous maxim above, I would also add "Good Race", and only back the right races. Our ratings are mathematically calculated in a completely objective manner, and therefore they work best on certain types of races and horses.

As an example of what you can achieve using RB Ratings, here are the results of backing all selections that follow these simple rules, which capture the essence of Pittsburg Phil's maxim. The rules are:

  1. Jockey rating (JR) must be 105+ and be ranked in the top 3 using the JR number
  2. Horse must have a Rating (Rtg) of 600+ and be ranked in the top 2 using the Rtg number
  3. Horse must be 4 or 5 years old.
  4. No Fillies and Mares races, No jumps races, and only races with prize money 20K+

Using these simple rules you will be backing a Good Jockey, on a Good Horse, in a Good Race, which to me sounds like a Good Bet. The results below show the results since Decmber 2013 that have been achieved using all our published ratings for Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays available to our clients.

Results from 07-Dec-2013 to 11-Feb-2018
Selections Wins Win% Units Profit
(Betfair SP after average 6.5% commission)
Profit% Profit on $100 bets
1121 349 31.13% 83.27 7.4% $8,327

These results are based on level stakes betting using the Betfair Starting Price after average commissions of 6.5% have been deducted. So in other words it's the actual profits. In some races you will be betting on two horses because both the top 2 qualify. If you've read "Handicapping My Way" then you will know that this is not such bad a thing. If you haven't read it, then go buy a copy from our book store here. If you prefer to bet proportionally according to the odds on offer then the profit is 6.7% (updated 11-Feb-2018).  Anything between 5 and 10% is considered excellent. This is a reasonably selective methodology with just 5 or 6 bets a week and therefore requires patience.  Taking Top Fluc with a bookmaker on Wed/Sat/Pub Holiday Metro races produces a substantially better result for those selections priced under $8.

Now you can achieve better results than this by widening the selection criteria and doing a bit more homework. For instance, it is a perfectly sound strategy to include horses rated 350+ in the top 2. But you will need to be more selective on the races to take on, AND you should pay close attention to the odds on offer. That's where the Assessed Price, AP100 will help. Your win strike rate based on individual selections will drop and so will the profit %, but the total units profit will increase.  Betting proportionately is highly recommended if using this approach.

Our Clients Say:

I have learnt a great deal and in particular your teaching on value overlay in line with the AP pricing has given me an edge and confidence in my investing.

John,
Well done!
Big meeting, mid to large fields, 10 races. Only 2 races where the RB Rtg/Rtg2 didn't win or place. A nice few bob for my Christmas Club on the rest.
The other thing it does is show the value of the Ratings where all the horses are really trying.

Roger B.    April 3, 2016    TAS

Do hope I have not bored you mate but just needed to share how RB Ratings and some analysis/data available to me has transformed my whole approach. Thank you John.
