Using the Ratings – Example 1

Here is an example of what you will receive as a client. Below is a brief explanation of how you might use the ratings and assessed prices.

ratings_example_cant0708Each race day you will receive a set of PDF files similar to this with ratings and assessed prices for each race.

The layout is constructed so that you can very quickly assess whether or not the race is worth betting on. Choosing the right races to bet on is one the most important elements of successful punting. It requires some knowledge and patience. Some races such as Maidens and races where the form of the horses competing is not fully exposed have far too many risks and should automatically be left alone.

The ratings sheet makes the task a little easier. Let's look at races 5, 6 and 7 at Canterbury on Wednesday 7 August 2013.

Race 5:

At first glance this race looks like a good betting proposition. The form is all exposed and the ratings are quite high for half of the field. I consider a rating of 225+ to be good. I like to see races where the ratings spread evenly from high numbers like 400+ down to less than 100.

First thing to note here is that half the field have a price $50+. Sometimes this can be a very good sign and other times it shows the race is too risky. Here it's not so bad, however we need to take a closer look at the first up runners.

Secondly, Spurtonic is first up and is poorly rated and priced, this is not a good sign. First up runners are a risk. Why? Because their fitness is unknown and difficult to predict accurately. So how do you assess the first up runners? One way to determine whether a first up runner has a chance or not is to use it's race day price as a guide to it's chances. As it turns out Spurtonic is sent out as second favourite at $5.10 on Betfair. Clearly his chances are not $50+ as indicated by the AP.

You could quite easily decide not to bet on this race, however Kim Warrior was $90 on Betfair and well worth a wager, perhaps for the place only at around $15 or each way. Likewise Lyrca Lass was $16+ on Betfair. Both very reasonable bets to make with potential huge profits. Many of our clients know that I'm always taking place bets like Kim Warrior.

Spurtonic won, and confirmed the suspicion about it's fitness and subsequent price.

Race 6:

Two first up runners here, but this time they are well in the ratings and assessed prices. King Of Love is $18 on Betfair and That's A Good Idea is $3.9. Revengeful is the favourite at $3.4. We have him at $17.60 and 5th rated. So what to do. King of Love's fitness might be in question which is why he is $18. Still worth betting on, though you would be justified in reducing your stake. Top rated Kanjistar is $10 on Betfair and a perfect bet, representing terrific value. That's a Good Idea is too short.

Kanjistar wins for a healthy profit.

Race 7:

Another good betting race. All the form is exposed and the ratings are nicely spread. Of the top 4 rated horses 3 are way over our assessed prices. Melman $10, Sheniyan $11 and Tmaunu Park $21. Unfortunately our 3rd rated horse Danas Best spoils the day and wins at the prohibitive short odds of $2.90.

Our Clients Say:

I have learnt a great deal and in particular your teaching on value overlay in line with the AP pricing has given me an edge and confidence in my investing.

John,
Well done!
Big meeting, mid to large fields, 10 races. Only 2 races where the RB Rtg/Rtg2 didn't win or place. A nice few bob for my Christmas Club on the rest.
The other thing it does is show the value of the Ratings where all the horses are really trying.

Well done at Hobart today. 6 winners on top and a second rater wins at $9.
Great job.
